I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to the country of Paraguay in South America. While there we saw many oxcarts carrying loads of goods on the cobblestone and red dirt roads of the Paraguayan countryside. One of our missionary leaders talked in Zone Conference about the scripture in Matthew, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." He spoke to us about the powerful image of Christ being the other person in our yoke carrying our burdens and making our loader lighter. This image struck me so much! Shortly thereafter, I read another scripture in the book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price in which Christ invites us "Walk with Me". I could suddenly picture myself walking along one of those red dirt roads with a large load on my head, like the Paraguayan women carry, and meeting Christ. He offers to help carry my load and invites me to walk with Him, but I am too stubborn and prideful to accept his help. So I trudge on until I trip and fall, face first in the dirt. Christ does not mock me or tell me "I told you so". Instead he stretches out His palm-scarred hand and once again bids me to walk with Him. This time, through tears of humility, I was agree to do so. While walking with Him, my load is so much lighter now and I am truly grateful for my Savior who is always there with me. How blessed we are to have Jesus Christ in our lives!

As I was lab'ring with my heavy load o'er jagged rocks and sand,
Along the road with yoke and cart I chanced to meet a man. I slowly came to where He stood. He kindly looked my way. With beck'ning voice of love and pow'r, I gently heard Him say. "Walk with me. Come take my yoke upon you, my friend. Walk with me. I 'll help to share the load. Though at time it might seem heavy. It's not, and I am ready. Walk with me, and I will lead you home." With deafened ears and harried thought I hurried on my way, 'Til stumbling on a hidden rock, I fell in quiet shame. Discouraged, tired, in the dirt, a hand helped me to stand. He wiped the dirt and tears away and bid me once again. "Walk with me. Come take my yoke upon you, my friend. Walk with me. I 'll help to share the load. Though at time it might seem heavy. It's not, and I am ready. Walk with me, and I will lead you home." As I walk on, the view is somehow diff'rent down that same dirt road. My step is light, my courage firm. There's something new I know. I've got a friend who shares the weight, and lifts me when I fall. Please listen for His loving voice. You too will hear Him call. "Walk with me. Come take my yoke upon you, my friend. Walk with me. I 'll help to share the load. Though at time it might seem heavy. It's not, and I am ready. Walk with me, and I will lead you home." |
